I have tried the Sports (or rather on...@Nick Salt,

I have tried the Sports (or rather one of the many re-badged vaersions made by Raleigh). I found that the steeper seat tube made me lean further forwards which meant I could get up some speed but it wasn't as pleasant somehow. When I was upright I found that it made my legs more tired than the Tourist, presumably because it was a less efficient position on that bike. The Sports is still a great bike, beating the hell out of the vast majority of bikes on the market now. However, that is my experience comparing a 2009 Tourist to a 70's Sports, which is hardly fair. I bet with comparable-era components it might be a different story.

@Don,

I knew at the time that it was at least fairly crap, but now I don't think I could put up with it for more than 5 minutes. I can only imagine what it would have been like to have a DL-1 or a Brompton back then.

@Rhode Long,

The Guv'nor is a lovely machine, although I'd struggle to justify the extra money over the Roadster Sovereign considering the latter comes with more accessories for less money. However, it has been suggested that the Guv'nor makes a better bike than the Roadster Sovereign when outfitted with the same accessories due to the Guv'nor's Cro-Mo frame. Plus it has cream Delta Cruisers, which are great. As for hub gears, they really were a revelation after faffing around with dérailleur gears for many years.

@Pete,

I often look back on those years where I wasn't cycling. If I'd had a Brompton way back then it'd have saved its price many times over on public transport (and related frustration), plus I'd likely still have it today.

@Ian,

What about the Chopper?

@ciaran-mooney,

If you'd like to do a guest post detailing your own experiences, I'd be happy to publish it here.Dr C.https://www.blogger.com/profile/10234078254243840589noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8919432872771641105.post-81698211103789358732011-10-02T17:13:51.451+01:002011-10-02T17:13:51.451+01:00Brilliant story.

It lasted a week. After arriving at Leeds University by train and without my bike it took me about 4 days to realise that getting around the city by foot or bus as was the norm for students was a real pain and took ages.

I was back in Manchester to get my bike the next weekend.petehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09988347024466013018noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8919432872771641105.post-29978421433499233932011-09-27T17:26:32.371+01:002011-09-27T17:26:32.371+01:00A great article - thank you!

My best ever junior bike was a Raleigh Grifter and now as an adult, having had a variety of otherwise excellent bikes but with derailleurs, I can vouch for the joy of hub gears for "normal" just get on and go bikes. My latest is a Pashley Guv'nor 3 spd. An expensive fair weather toy but I find myself using this more than my hybrid commuter as I can just get on an go in normal clothes.Rhode Longhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14915552340092347797noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8919432872771641105.post-78992044652508652011-09-26T12:54:19.897+01:002011-09-26T12:54:19.897+01:00May I salute your sir, for riding THAT bike for al...May I salute your sir, for riding THAT bike for almost 2 years?!

I think such determination and perserverance deserves recognition!

DonAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8919432872771641105.post-33913083267891055172011-09-25T19:18:27.695+01:002011-09-25T19:18:27.695+01:00Have you tried the 3 speed sports model? They are a completely different beast to the roadsters, if you put alloy rims and schwalbes on them they ride really quickly, fun for the puzzled look of hybrid riders as you pass them sat bolt upright without a trace of sweat, a real sleeper bike ;)Nick Salthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13902036894951132825noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8919432872771641105.post-5627981451044133802011-09-25T09:03:51.403+01:002011-09-25T09:03:51.403+01:00Really enjoyed reading this - looking forward to p...Really enjoyed reading this - looking forward to part two!leeannhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15772070801939258710noreply@blogger.com
