Good luck with your exploratory surgery.

@Pete,

Variety is the spice of life! I know that most people will have no desire to attempt to repair a broken lamp (especially if it wasn't that expensive). However, if it happened to me, it'll have happened to someone else too (as Mr Arditti's experience shows). My hope is that anyone who has had the same problem (and wishes to pursue a similar resolution) can find some help here.

@amoeba,

I had considered something like that, it seems like a good idea. The main reason I used the tape is because it was what I happened to have to hand at the time. If (when) I have to revisit this repair, I'll see if I can acquire a bit of silicone sealant instead. The UV issue would be fairly minimal for the Brompton (it has a fairly cushy life really).Dr C.https://www.blogger.com/profile/10234078254243840589noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8919432872771641105.post-82982977608817024462011-10-17T14:59:34.834+01:002011-10-17T14:59:34.834+01:00Instead of what appears to be masking tape, I reco...Instead of what appears to be masking tape, I recommend the use of silicone sealant, as might be used around baths and windows. While it isn't meant for this purpose and there are reasons why it isn't perfect for this use, many DIY-ers may well have some silicone-based bath or window sealant under the stairs etc., but the cost of buying purpose-made electronics-grade silicone RTV sealant would be hard to justify and probably be a significant percentage of the cost of a new light.
Unlike the masking tape, which is vulnerable to abrasion and liable to loss of adhesion, silicone rubber remains flexible, is robust, weather resistant and ideal for resisting vibration levels such as found on bicycles. The long-term reliability of non-external grades of silicone rubber may be affected by exposure to UV - which rather depends upon where you store your bike.amoebahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15783694650121687459noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8919432872771641105.post-17887159019358930552011-10-17T14:42:28.619+01:002011-10-17T14:42:28.619+01:00This comment has been removed by the author.amoebahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15783694650121687459noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8919432872771641105.post-72589108279357163882011-10-12T23:31:17.715+01:002011-10-12T23:31:17.715+01:00Hmm.

I've never done anything about it, but now you have shed some light on the possible cause, I may do so.
